Career context leading to RFP® pursuit
“Looking back on my thirty-three years in finance and leadership, I can say I’ve had a truly colorful career. I began in SGV, leading teams on high-profile projects—including market assessments on Vietnam before it opened internationally and advisory work on key government asset sales. After completing my MBA at Duke University, I joined an airport consulting firm in the United States, which brought me through multiple airports across the country—even if I rarely saw the cities beyond the terminals.
From there, I entered the healthcare sector. At Concentra, I was assigned to turn around a project thought to be unprofitable; our team eventually delivered US$25 million in revenues. That success led me to become CFO of HDI in Las Vegas, where—after four strong years—we sold the company for US$400 million. I led the negotiations.
I later moved to Houston, serving as Finance Director for Nova, a multi-location clinic network, and Regional CFO for RightStep, a substance-abuse treatment company. Our team negotiated a US$25 million credit line for Nova’s expansion and improved RightStep’s profitability to the point where the Texas region subsidized others.
When I returned to the Philippines, I continued working with companies across several sectors, improving collections for electric utilities, strengthening profitability for power-generation firms, expanding a microfinance loan portfolio, rebuilding an FMCG company’s accounting systems, and preventing multimillion-peso losses in a construction group. Most recently, I led an outplacement firm to grow revenues by 96%, 15%, and 20% year-over-year.
Given all these experiences, one might ask: Why pursue the Registered Financial Planner (RFP®) program?”
Motivation for joining the RFP® program
“Across decades of working with organizations, one troubling pattern stood out: while companies can achieve strong financial results, many Filipinos remain financially insecure. The average Filipino worker often lacks the capability, confidence, and mindset to manage personal finances responsibly. Many choose to avoid discussions about money—not because they don’t care, but because debt, obligations, and financial missteps can feel embarrassing or deeply personal.
I joined the RFP® program to better understand this mindset and to connect with others who are passionate about improving financial literacy in the Philippines. Through instructors like Prof. Xy dela Torre and Mr. Efren Cruz, I learned not just financial strategies, but also how to communicate them in ways ordinary Filipinos can relate to. The program also sharpened my ability to recognize scams and protect others from them.”
Influence of RFP® on financial approach
“The most valuable lesson I gained from RFP® is that financial improvement is not about technical formulas alone—it is about behavior, consistency, and awareness of options. Simple strategies, when taught clearly and applied early, can dramatically change someone’s financial trajectory.
The RFP® program reinforced my belief that financial planning should be a family conversation, not a taboo topic. This became a core part of my own financial journey: approaching money with greater intentionality, involving my loved ones, and making decisions with long-term security in mind.”
Planned application of RFP® training
“My next step is to serve as a Fractional CFO for SMEs—organizations that need strategic financial leadership but cannot yet afford a full-time executive. Since 90% of Philippine businesses are SMEs, the need is enormous. And it is far too large for one person to address alone.
This is why we need more Registered Financial Planners—professionals committed to helping Filipinos make informed decisions and guiding business owners toward sustainable growth.”
Recommendation of the RFP® certification
“I highly recommend the RFP® program to anyone—whether for personal financial growth or for building a career in financial advisory. The program helps people: rethink their relationship with money, build confidence in financial decision-making, protect themselves from scams and misinformation, and ultimately, create a more secure future for themselves and their families.
If more Filipinos become financially literate, we can shift our economy from one dependent on consumption and “ayuda” mindsets into one that is investment-led and future-ready.”
