Real Finance People – JASON S. ARQUILLANO, AFP®

Jason S. Arquillano, AFP®, is a financial professional whose journey from Overseas Filipino Worker to certified financial planner reflects a powerful transformation in how he views and manages money. His Associate Financial Planner (AFP®) designation affirms his expertise in guiding individuals and families toward sound financial planning and wealth building. His earliest memory of money was receiving his salary as an OFW and not knowing what to do with it—money was something to spend, not manage. A pivotal turning point came during the pandemic, when being stuck in the Philippines for nearly two years led him to reflect on years of earning since 2015 without building real financial security. This realization motivated him to stop going with the flow and take his finances seriously.

Arquillano’s financial philosophy has evolved from being a spender to working intentionally toward becoming an investor. Guided by his mentors’ advice to build a strong financial foundation before investing, he now approaches budgeting and financial planning with care, tracking his spending and making every peso purposeful. His AFP® certification not only marks his professional credibility but also reflects his commitment to helping others avoid the same financial mistakes he made. Through his personal story of growth and dedication to financial education, he exemplifies a relatable, disciplined, and client-centered financial professional empowered to guide others toward lasting financial security and independence.

AFP® Certification Story

Investment Lessons and Risk Management

Have you ever made an investment that did not go as planned? What did you learn from it?
“I once opened a restaurant business using loan money without fully understanding the risks and cash flow demands of running a restaurant. It didn’t go as planned, and I struggled with the debt. I learned to always understand a product or business fully—including the risks, the numbers, and your readiness—before putting money into it.”

How do you balance risk and reward when making financial decisions?
“I try to balance it by understanding my goals and timeline first, then choosing investments that match my risk tolerance instead of chasing high returns blindly.”

What is a money goal you are currently working toward?
“Building a stable investment portfolio, achieving financial freedom as an OFW, and retiring early.”

AFP® Program and Financial Growth

What motivated you to join the AFP program, and how did it influence your approach to financial planning?
“The pandemic made me realize I needed real financial knowledge. Meeting IMG (International Marketing Group) motivated me to join the AFP program and finally take my finances seriously.”

How has becoming an AFP® helped you make better investment and wealth-building decisions?
“It gave me the foundation and confidence to start investing properly instead of just saving blindly or relying on guesswork.”

What is the most valuable lesson you learned from the AFP program, and how have you applied it in your own financial journey?
“The most valuable lesson is to build your financial foundation first—budgeting, emergency fund, and protection—before investing. I’ve applied this by structuring my finances step by step instead of jumping straight into investments.”
